S.O.M.A
A Nervous System Intervention
Learn our 4-part Embodied Processing Method
If you are a therapist or coach seeking to integrate cutting edge nervous system theory into clinical practice, join us for an experiential workshop.
The S.O.M.A Method™ draws on sensory awareness, bilateral stimulation, inner chid work, breathwork, tapping, yoga therapy, and more to support neurosomatic processing and repatterning.
Using four core somatic interventions, this method helps clients process trauma exactly where it’s held—in the intricate pathways of the nervous system.
Sense.Open.Move.Awaken™
The S.O.M.A Intervention
Sense.Open.Move.Awaken
An embodied processing sequence to transform nervous system states.
Sense
Sense your nervous system state from within. Learn to listen to your felt- sense and discover parts, patterns, images, memories and emotions present in the roots of your psyche.
Somatically sense the emotions suppressed during trauma and the contractions in the body keeping them stuck and you activated.
Open
Begin to soften contractions through the social engagement system. Notice how you are controlling, tensing and defending against feelings.
Bring affectionate attention and resourcing to contracted patterns.
Opening is a practice of receiving and internalizing support so patterns of bracing can soften.
Soften the body's contractions with inner-child dialogue. Invite and increase permission to feel
Practice mindfulness based self-compassion and Non-Resistance.
Move
Mobilize suppressed survival responses & emotions with shaking, sighing, sounding, humming, and various forms of expression.
Engage in physicalizing practices to instinctively move and express what was at one time uninvited.
Mobilize the nervous system to re-access states of ease.
Awaken
Awaken and embody ventral vegal states of connection and flourishing. Remember your empowered self-- a body both at ease and energized.
Rooted in nurture, awaken nervous system patterns of creativity, low tension and balanced energy.
Teach clients compassionate stillness and inner listening
Nervous System Embodied Patterns

Life experiences and childhood dynamics leave survival imprints in ones nervous system - patterned biological pathways.
The S.O.M.A Method understands self as an adaptive system, responding to overwhelm, stress or ease through three nervous system pathways: collapse, control, and connect.
Some childhood imprints exist in sympathetic (these are fighting for control), some in collapse (these have given up) and some live in connection (these are present and relational).
Our understanding of clients patterns and day-to- day struggles honors the science of this regulatory system.

The following modalities are covered in our four week training.

Carolyn Kutsko, PhD
Dr. Kutsko created the S.O.M.A Method from hundreds of her own client sessions. She is a licensed therapist and holds her PhD in Somatic and Clinical Psychology with certificates in EMDR, Relational Somatic Psychotherapy, Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy, BodyWay Emotional Eating Recovery, The Daring Way, Thai Massage, and Somatic Breathwork.
She wrote her dissertation on “Full Emotional Expression,” an exploration in relational support within catharsis, where she challenges theories cautioning expressive emoting and demonstrates through a phenomenological study the efficacy of relationally supported catharsis and the often miss-used and miss-understood use of "window of tolerance". She describes The S.O.M.A Method as an experiential form of therapy, waking up the body's natural organismic healing capacity.
